Infiltrates

Figure: Infiltrates

Transudate vs Exudate

  • Transudates are ultrafiltrates of blood plasma caused by systemic factors (such as increased hydrostatic pressure or decreased oncotic pressure, as seen in heart failure or cirrhosis). They characteristically have low protein and low fibrinogen content (leading to low/decreased fibrin) and do not clot easily.
  • Exudates, by contrast, are caused by increased capillary permeability (inflammation, infection, malignancy) and feature high protein, high fibrinogen (which forms fibrin clots), high LDH, and higher cellular content.
